In May 1980, the XIVth International Tourist Meeting of Friendship took place in Eisenach and Wilhelmsthal with the participation of large delegations from Czechoslovakia and the People's Republic of Poland. The Cultural Association of the GDR, Section Hiking and Tourism, was the organizer of the event, with the idea of creating a long-distance hiking within the Socialist States Community was born.

On May 28, 1983, the mountain trail was opened in Eisenach with a ceremony on the Wartburg. In October 1983, the Hungarian section was opened in Budapest, which is also the eastern part of the national long-distance trail Országos Kéktúra.

Until 1989, the mountain trail of friendship was the only cross-border long-distance hiking trail of the former socialist states GDR, Poland, CSSR and Hungary.

After 1989, most of the EB path was integrated into the European long-distance path E3. (On a smaller section in Slovakia, the E8 runs, and the Hungarian part is part of the E4.) The EB way is now considered part and complement of the E3, where he has maintained his own route in Thuringia and Saxony. As a result, it continues to have a high profile in Germany, while the EB logo to the east has largely been replaced by the E3 logo.
